Manifold Coherence: Rethinking Biological Complexity in Health and Disease
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Traditional approaches to biological complexity have largely focused on quanti- tative measures that fail to capture the qualitative nature of biological organization. This paper proposes a theoretical reframing of biological complexity as manifold coher- ence within hyperdimensional information spaces. Rather than measuring complexity through component counts, we argue that the essence of biological complexity lies in the coherent organization of information across multiple interacting dimensions. The endocrine system provides compelling evidence for this framework: in metabolic syndrome, for example, disrupted coherence between insulin, glucagon, and cortisol rhythms—rather than simply abnormal levels of any single hormone—drives pathol- ogy. We provide mathematical formalizations using phase coherence analysis, differ- ential geometry, and topological data analysis to quantify manifold coherence, explore its clinical applications, and outline testable hypotheses. This framework offers new perspectives on health, disease, and adaptation with significant implications for clinical practice, particularly in endocrinology.
