Forging Cross-Stakeholder Partnerships to Accelerate Geoscience Discoveries: Cultivating Sustainable Disciplinary Open Science Communities
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This proposal was submitted on 14 Feb 2025 to the NSF GEO OSE Track 1 solicitation. The Co-PIs are Shelley Stall (AGU), Danie Kinkade (WHOI), and Natalie Raia (UA). Special thank you to Lesley Wyborn who was integral in developing the approach and coordinated with the international seismology community and many others. Thank you to the individuals who intend to join us as Network Collaborator Committee members, Discipline Leadership, Discipline Liaisons, and those supporting the effort with Letters of Collaboration. Thank you and please know our gratitude! For this work to be successful, it will require extensive participation and collaboration internationally. If you are engaging this work here on Zenodo and want to be included, please provide your contact information here: Collaboration Form Project Summary This proposal seeks funding to convene, engage, and co-develop a critically-needed, low-tech, and sustainable framework for community specific data sharing practices with three geoscience disciplines: hydrology, oceans, and seismology. We will create a centralized web platform for discovering and accessing existing but disparate resources that will provide the activation energy necessary to infuse FAIR and Open Data and Science practices into current research workflows. The process will be researcher-driven, vetted and endorsed. The goal is to empower the target disciplines to be knowledgeable of, connected to, and adopt use of, their community’s existing CI resources, technologies and leading practices; proactive in effectively and efficiently managing and sharing FAIR research outputs. The impact of this proposal will result in higher quality, interoperable data being shared through community-preferred disciplinary repositories, accessible for immediate reuse in data-driven research, including AI/ML applications. A Framework Toolkit, will serve as a template for additional disciplines demonstrating community readiness. Project Outcomes (items 1-3 for each discipline) Include: 1. A Discipline-Specific Data and Digital Object Management Framework containing a vetted set of leading practices that are reviewed, approved, and mapped to the framework. 2. A neutrally-branded web platform of trusted content with the context to apply the information. 3. Engaged Discipline Leadership, Liaisons, and researchers that support and sustain the framework. 4. Framework Toolkit, with implementation guidance, for use by additional disciplines Letters of Collaboration Hydrology Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences Incorporated (CUAHSI) Environmental Data Initiative Oceans British Oceanographic Data Centre: British Antarctic Survey Seismology National French Seismological Data Center, ISTerre AuScope EarthScope Swiss Seismological Service Cross-Discipline PANGAEA NSF FAIROS RCN FAIR Facilities and Instruments, FAIROS RCN Award 2226397 Scientific Societies and Organizations Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) of the International Science Council (ISC) Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) European Geosciences Union, Earth and Space Science Informatics Division (EGU ESSI) World Data System (WDS) Data Reuse Researcher Dr. Ixchel M.
