LUMEN Deliverable 3.1 User Needs and Personas Report

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This deliverable (D3.1) reports on the results of initial user research of LUMEN. The project specifi c objective relevant to WP3 is the following: SO2 - Enhance the qualitative discovery of research outputs by establishing an ecosystem of innovative features.Aligned with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), LUMEN will establish a federated discovery ecosystem that enables sharing, reusing, and accessing data across multiple scientifi c disciplines, including Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), Mathematics, Earth Systems and Molecular Dynamics. Furthermore, the LUMEN ecosystem builds upon the GoTriple discovery platform, originally designed for SSH, by integrating it into a federated infrastructure that connects diverse research communities and scientifi c domains through shared discovery services. The work on user research is crucial for connecting the different communities and domains, as it supports fi nding a synthesis and a common denominator across different types of users, with different needs and goals. This work is underpinned by fi rst understanding and then situating the users needs and voice in the design and delivery of LUMEN. This report delivers the results of 33 in-depth, user interviews conducted across the four LUMEN scientifi c domains. The analysis and synthesis across the user interviews is presented as 11 user personas, 11 scenarios and a set of 19 design functionalities. The LUMEN user-centred design approach fosters autonomy and ownership among users by ensuring the system refl ects their contextual needs and practices. As LUMEN will incorporate a variety of resources, it has been essential to understand which tools and data types scientists are interacting with. Additionally, cross-disciplinary goals of LUMEN support the need to understand the exchange of knowledge, outside of usual siloed communities. This deliverable is currently under review by the European Commission.
