Sex Modification in Cucurbits

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Cucurbits, a vital crop group within the Cucurbitaceae family, display diverse sex forms ranging from hermaphroditism to monoecy, offering unique breeding opportunities. This article explores the evolution and manipulation of sex expression in cucurbits, emphasizing genetic and non-genetic factors. Environmental elements like temperature and photoperiod, alongside cultural practices, can influence sex ratios. The role of plant growth regulators (PGRs), such as ethylene and gibberellins, is discussed in the context of enhancing female flower production to optimize yields. Genetic interventions, including the use of gynoecious lines and molecular markers, have revolutionized hybrid seed production, offering cost-effective methods for increasing fruit yield. The development of molecular markers for early sex identification, combined with biotechnology, is crucial in improving cucurbit breeding programs. This synthesis highlights the advancements in sex manipulation strategies that promise to enhance the productivity and sustainability of cucurbit crops.
