Heritage-In-Making: Engagement with Young People's Cultural Practices in India
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the perceptions and practices of 'Indian Culture' among young people in India, revealing a paradoxical uniformity in their understanding of cultural inheritance. Through two case studies - a group of drumming (Dhol-Tasha Pathak) and a group of wall painters - this research explores the localised and youth-driven cultural practices in Pune city in Maharashtra, India. Employing voluntary and prominent groups among young people aged 14-25, this study examines the diverse socio-economic contexts and cultural engagement. Data collection via interviews and participant observation reveals the complex and elusive nature of culture as defined by young people, highlighting the challenges of grasping this concept in India's pluralistic society
