Empowering Women in Fisheries and Aquaculture: Bridging Gender Gaps for Sustainable Development and Social Equity
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the multidimensional role of women in small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, emphasizing their vital contributions, the challenges they face, and pathways for empowerment. Through a systematic review of peer-reviewed journals, policy reports, and case studies, the research delves into women’s empowerment, gender equality, and sustainable practices within the sector. The findings highlight the substantial yet frequently underreported participation of women in Asia, where ecosystem-based and gender-transformative approaches have demonstrated significant gains in productivity and empowerment. Notable interventions include integrated agriculture-aquaculture systems that balance ecological sustainability with socio-economic resilience and value-chain activities that create economic opportunities while reducing gender disparities. Programs in education, training, and extension services are particularly transformative, with Bangladesh exemplifying how these initiatives correlate strongly with enhanced women’s empowerment. However, persistent barriers such as cultural norms, financial constraints, and unequal access to resources continue to hinder women’s full participation in the sector. Addressing these challenges necessitates a comprehensive strategy that integrates inclusive policies, grassroots initiatives, and robust research efforts. Recognizing and amplifying women’s contributions can foster sustainability, resilience, and social justice in fisheries and aquaculture, ensuring that women play a central role in shaping the future of these sectors.
