AI-Powered Smart Grids: Balancing Security and Ethics

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As the traditional power grid transitions into a smart grid, the growing dependence on artificial intelligence (AI) presents both opportunities and challenges. AI stands out as a tool through which efficiency, automation, and cybersecurity can be accomplished. It also poses an array of threats, such as cyberattacks, privacy violations, and algorithmic bias. If such challenges are not effectively addressed by the appropriate measures, the integrity and fairness of smart grid operations will certainly suffer. This paper explores AI-driven cybersecurity solutions that strengthen grid resilience against threats like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and data breaches. Besides this, it also examines the ethical perspectives of AI in smart grids, particularly around bias in energy distribution and the opacity of AI-led decision-making processes. For a safe and ethical transition, this study proposes a framework that consolidates the presence of advanced-level cybersecurity solutions, fairness-aware AI, and regulatory compliance. By fostering collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders, AI can be responsibly leveraged for the creation of a sustainable, secure, and equitable smart grid ecosystem.
