From Curtailment to Capacity: Unlocking Europe's Energy Future with TSTM Storage
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This publication presents a strategic solution to one of Europe’s most pressing energy challenges: the large-scale curtailment of renewable electricity due to inadequate transmission capacity and lack of seasonal storage. TSTM (Tubular Storage Tank Modules) is a methane-based energy storage innovation that repurposes existing infrastructure such as disused pipelines and coal-fired power plants. Offering long-duration, cost-effective storage at <€10/kWh and lifespans exceeding 40 years, TSTM enables both land-based and offshore deployment. The system converts otherwise wasted renewable electricity into stored methane, stabilizing the grid and accelerating the decarbonization process. This paper outlines the technical concept, compares TSTM with batteries and hydrogen, and explores policy implications, safety protocols, and economic potential. It concludes with a call for storage-oriented energy policy as a pillar of Europe's energy transition.
