Machine translation difficulties of culture-specific elements in English news articles

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The article examines the quality of machine translation in comparison to human translation on the material of the news article “Revealed: Tories Failed to Do Impact Check before Approving Banned Pesticide” from Britain's most widely read newspaper ‘The Guardian”, dated July 24, 2024. In the absence of an official Russian translation of this article, the focus shifts to advanced online translators such as DeepL, Google Translate, Reverso, Microsoft Bing, and Yandex Translate. The analysis highlights culture-specific elements, idioms, and specialized terminology that may present challenges for machine translation. The shortcomings observed in these translations stress the necessity for human translators to be involved in translating process in order to ensure accuracy and adequacy, particularly in lexically complex and culturally rich texts.
