Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In Pakistan and societies where patriarchy dominantly exists, educating women plays a pivotal role in the nominal eradication of male supremacy. Despite women being guaranteed equal rights and opportunities, they continue to experience high levels of economic dependence, social exclusion, and cultural marginalization. The following study examines the role of education in empowering women in Pakistan while enlightening the socio-cultural barriers that hinder women’s access to education and empowerment. A review of existing literature highlights the transformative potential of education in promoting women's sovereignty, self-esteem, and economic independence. The findings suggest that education is the core for enhancing an individual’s decision-making, economic participation, and social mobility. For challenging patriarchal norms education is deemed fundamental to women's empowerment and negotiating their domestic and social engagements. However, the research also reports that socio-cultural barriers, including the likes of patriarchal norms, early marriages, and limited access to educational resources, have continually obstructed the promotion of gender equality. Policy reforms, increased government support for girls' education, and community-level interventions to promote women's empowerment and gender equality in Pakistan have also been discussed and negated, ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the development of effective strategies for uplifting non-discriminatory gender practices, and to contradict policy and practice in this area.
