RNA from Chaos: Prebiotic Biofilms as the Structural Origin of Genetic Material

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This paper proposes a novel structural hypothesis for the origin of RNA. In the chaotic early Earth oceans, uneven chemical gradients led to the accumulation and stratification of nucleobases on mineral surfaces and organic films. These layered prebiotic biofilms, stabilized by Earth-derived adhesives such as ribose, phosphate, and sulfur compounds, formed “molecular dirt” on rock and oil membranes. Environmental fragmentation and reassembly of these films resulted in symmetric, palindromic, and repetitive RNA-like motifs capable of self-folding. This model reinterprets RNA not as a random polymer product, but as a patterned and physically coherent residue of the Earth's early energy and matter gradients, aligned with the principles of Unified Pattern Theory.
