Echoes of Identity: Cultural Heritage, Language, and Ethical Dilemmas in Postcolonial Literature

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper explores the interwoven themes of cultural heritage, language, and ethics in postcolonial and diasporic English literature. Through close readings of key texts such as Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Decolonizing the Mind, Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, and Vijay Tendulkar’s Kamala, the study demonstrates how literature functions as a powerful medium for preserving marginalized histories, reclaiming identity through language, and interrogating complex moral dilemmas. It argues that postcolonial literature does not merely document cultural and ethical conflicts but actively resists colonial legacies by reasserting indigenous voices and values. The paper further illustrates how these themes intersect to construct a layered understanding of identity, memory, and justice in literary expression.
