Measurement-Induced Symmetry Distortion: Revisiting Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Electron Systems

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Description: This publication offers a critical analysis of a recent study featured by Nanotechnology World on spontaneous symmetry breaking in electron systems, which used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to detect square wave patterns in electron density. Drawing on quantum mechanical principles, including insights from the double-slit experiment, I argue that electron-based imaging techniques may inadvertently alter the very systems they aim to observe—leading to measurement-induced symmetry distortion. Referencing my earlier work on the NFMAKH and N-K Model (Zenodo DOI: https://zenodo.org/records/15508809), I emphasize the need for non-invasive measurement techniques to truly capture the spontaneous nature of symmetry breaking. This paper calls for a reassessment of how we observe delicate quantum phenomena and cautions against interpreting actively scanned data as purely natural or unperturbed. The conclusions support a broader philosophical and scientific framework where the act of observation must be carefully separated from the reality being observed, especially at the quantum level.
