Abstract: In modern Indian writing in English, there are a large number of women writers, especially women novelists who grab the opportunity to show their mastery over handling of such thematic perceptions which decode the role of women in typical traditional Indian society by making comparison and contrast with the past. In the novels of Githa Hariharan, Manju Kapoor, Jhumpa Lahiri, Kiran Desai, Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni, Madhuri Mukherjee, Shashi Deshpande etc. we find the depiction of modern women in different contexts as opposed to the conventional woman as symbolized by Sita.
