Labour Analgesia – A Road Towards Standard Obstetric Care
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Labour analgesia has witnessed a profound transformation from rudimentary methods like etherization to sophisticated neuraxial techniques that prioritize maternal safety, comfort, and fetal well-being. With a deepening understanding of pain physiology, innovations in pharmacological and non-pharmacological modalities, and the evolving role of the obstetric anaesthesiologist, modern pain relief strategies during labour are highly refined. This review explores the historical context, pain pathways, available analgesic options, clinical benefits, and emerging innovations in labour analgesia. Special emphasis is placed on neuraxial techniques and their significance in elevating the standard of obstetric care. The article also addresses misconceptions surrounding early analgesia and provides an outlook on future advancements poised to revolutionize maternal care.
