Challenges of Rural Roads in Nigeria and Its Socio-Economic Impact on the People

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In Nigeria, the lack of good roads in rural areas is having a negative impact on the agricultural sector, which has the potential to boost the country's economy. To identify the root cause of this issue and propose solutions, a comprehensive study was conducted. A well-crafted questionnaire was distributed to various stakeholders, including political figures, traditional leaders, academics, construction industry professionals, and rural residents. Using the Likert Scale, the data collected from 500 completed questionnaires showed that funding, political will, poor maintenance practices, and the use of substandard materials were critical factors contributing to the problem with a Likert value of 3.5 and above. Climate change was identified as a non-critical factor with a Likert value of 2.216, while insecurity remained neutral with a Likert value of 2.626. Given the impact of climate change and flooding on rural areas, the study explored the use of established modifiers like shredded tire chips, waste polythene bags, and candle wax to modify asphalt concrete in extreme moisture conditions. The results indicated that the use of these modifiers was cost-effective, with the rate of 60%, 36%, and 31% respectively. This study recommends that the government and relevant stakeholders should develop the political will to genuinely serve the people and incorporate modifiers in the mix design and construction of rural roads.
