Shared water and fisheries: Strategies for effective management
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Transboundary river systems, which traverse the borders of multiple nations, pose significant challenges for fisheries management due to their shared nature and diverse stakeholder interests. Effective governance of these aquatic resources is essential for maintaining sustainable fish populations and the livelihoods of communities that rely on them. This article focuses on the ecological and socio-economic dimensions of fisheries in these regions, highlighting the impacts of environmental changes, overfishing, and infrastructure developments such as dams. Additionally, it also emphasizes the need for scientific research, data sharing, and community involvement in promoting sustainable fishing practices. Effective fisheries management in transboundary river systems involves an integrated approach that combines ecological sustainability with economic and social demands, assuring resilience and prosperity for future generations.
