Echoes of the Past: Oral Tradition as a Living Legacy

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Oral traditions form the bedrock of human cultural heritage, encompassing storytelling, songs, epics, chants, and rituals that have transmitted histories, values, and worldviews long before the invention of writing systems. More than static remnants of bygone eras, oral traditions are living legacies that continue to evolve, reflecting the adaptability, resilience, and creativity of human societies. In India, epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana have been preserved through diverse oral performances, ensuring their vitality across generations and cultural landscapes (Pollock 24). Similarly, Native American oral traditions have safeguarded ecological knowledge and spiritual values, offering critical connections between indigenous wisdom and contemporary sustainability practices (Deloria 112). Today, oral traditions find renewed expressions through digital media, such as podcasts, spoken-word performances, and virtual storytelling platforms, reinforcing their contemporary relevance. This paper explores how oral traditions bridge the past and present, serve as vehicles of identity and resistance, and contribute meaningfully to understanding human diversity and interconnectedness.
