Divine Humility in Christ: A Christological Study of Jesus Christ as Servant and Its Implications for Contemporary Church Leadership

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the Christological identity of Jesus as "Servant" and its implications for contemporary church leadership. Anchored in a library-based qualitative methodology, the paper draws from scriptural exegesis, patristic writings, and modern theological reflections to examine Jesus’ servanthood as central to His mission and as a model for Christian leadership. Using Servant Leadership and Transformational Leadership Theories, as guiding frameworks, the study reinterprets Jesus’ self-emptying (kenosis) and sacrificial service not merely as historical events but as enduring paradigms for ethical, humble, and relational leadership in the Church today. The findings reveal that Jesus redefined greatness through selfless service, inviting church leaders to reject hierarchical dominance and embrace relational authority rooted in humility, compassion, and shared identity with the community. The study offers practical recommendations, including integrating servant-leadership training in ministerial formation, fostering inclusive leadership structures, and developing mentorship models rooted in Christlike humility. Future studies are encouraged to empirically assess the impact of servant leadership models in diverse church contexts, especially in Africa, where cultural norms often challenge such ideals. By returning to the Servant Christ, the Church may rediscover its moral authority and social relevance.
