A Comparative Analysis of ESG Initiatives and Corporate Performance in the Philippine Oil Industry Using Power BI

Abstract: This study conducts a comparative analysis of the 2023 sustainability (ESG) initiatives of Shell Pilipinas Corporation (SPC) and Petron Corporation, major players in the competitive Philippine oil industry. It evaluates ESG indicators and uses data visualisation from their 2023 sustainability and financial reports to explore the potential link to corporate performance. Findings indicate Shell leads environmentally with a net-zero target and more solar-powered sites, and socially with higher community investments. While both show strong governance, Shell aligns with more international frameworks. Financially, Petron showed stronger net income and earnings growth in 2023. The study recommends further ESG integration across the industry, supporting the idea that ESG initiatives can contribute to operational efficiency and long-term profitability in the sector.
