Review Closing the Gap: Improving Diagnostics for Multi-drug-resistant Tuberculosis: Experience From Maiduguri, Borno State, Northeastern Nigeria

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This review explores advancements and challenges in diagnosing multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Maiduguri, Borno State, Northeastern Nigeria. MDR-TB presents significant public health challenges due to its resistance to standard treatments, making accurate and timely diagnosis crucial for effective management and control. This review generates findings from various studies and reports, highlighting the limitations of conventional diagnostic methods, such as smear microscopy and culture, which are often inadequate for detecting drug resistance. The introduction and implementation of molecular diagnostic tools, particularly the GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay, have significantly improved the detection rates of MDR-TB. This review also examines the local infrastructure, healthcare workers training, and community awareness efforts in Maiduguri, emphasizing the need for continuous education and capacity building. The analysis underscores the importance of integrating new diagnostic technologies with existing public health strategies to enhance early detection and treatment, ultimately aiming to curb the spread of MDR-TB in the region. The findings advocate for sustained funding, international collaboration, and policy support to further improve diagnostic capabilities and healthcare outcomes in Northeastern Nigeria.
