Effect of Seaweed Extract on Onion under Drought Conditions
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Drought stress is a significant constraint on crop productivity, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Onion (Allium cepa L.) is highly susceptible to water deficits, which impact bulb yield, size, and quality. Seaweed extracts (SWE) have emerged as effective biostimulants, enhancing plant resilience to abiotic stresses, including drought. This study evaluates the role of SWE in improving onion growth under drought stress by analyzing its effects on root development, water retention, photosynthetic efficiency, and nutrient uptake. The results indicate that SWE-treated onions exhibit increased drought tolerance, improved water use efficiency (WUE), and enhanced yield compared to untreated controls.
