Helping Open Science Infrastructure by State-of-the-Art Identity & Access Management Solutions
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Last year, the FIM4L working group investigated the need for access management within the Open Science ecosystem. The results are published in our latest blogpost, where use cases for managing access have been collected, to show that although the content is open access eventually, authentication can be useful for authenticity of the content and/or reviews, in pre-publication processes, etc. Presenting this at the conference will be a very logical step to draw attention to this part of Open Science infrastructure. We also found that Open Access (OA) publishing does not always mean open for anyone. This includes that an authentication layer is needed in publishing systems or research infrastructures. As such, OA articles may be published with what we call managed access control. Another finding is that the Open Science environment will benefit from the usage of the worldwide Research & Education authentication federation called eduGAIN, which allows the researcher to access content at any federated service while authenticating with the own local campus account. FIM4L has worked on guidelines for libraries that prevent the transfer of personal data to service providers. The poster will show the use cases FIM4L has listed in a clear and brief manner, including: Geo location restrictions Citizenship limitations Age limitations The content will be divided into two sections: Data processing in collaboration infrastructure, citizen science, and university presses. Data or material publishing in repositories and university presses. FIM4L is also closely monitoring digital wallets development. In the poster current status of digital wallets development including usage for Open Science managed access will be provided.
