Economics of Ecological Restoration: The Role of Medicinal Plants in Slope Stabilization and Soil Recovery
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: : The ecological fragility of areas such as the Western Ghats and Himalayan foothills is highlighted by ongoing soil erosion and landslides, which severely impact agriculture, infrastructure, and rural livelihoods. Conventional solutions - such as concrete barriers and mechanical slope reinforcements - are expensive and ecologically damaging. This study explores an alternative approach using three plant species: Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), selected for their combined benefits in soil stabilization, erosion control, and economic value. A comparative cost-benefit analysis was derived from the secondary data from restoration projects, market valuations of medicinal and aromatic plants, and ecosystem services literature. The methodology included estimating planting and maintenance costs, projected yields, and revenue potential from plant-based products, alongside ecological benefits such as carbon sequestration, enhanced microbial activity, and improved water retention. The research highlights that integrating plant-based strategies for stabilizing slopes and restoring soil is not only more effective, reducing erosion by over 60%, but also more economical, lowering costs by nearly 40% compared to conventional approaches. All three plants include Vetiver, Lemongrass, and Ashwagandha, which deliver economic benefits through their production of essential oils and medicinal applications. The combined ecological and economic advantages empower local communities to participate in land restoration efforts actively. The study highlights the need for policy support to encourage multifunctional vegetation use in areas facing soil degradation and landslide risks. The research makes sound reasoning for aligning ecological targets with economic growth and serves as actionable guidance for decision-makers who wish to execute large-scale nature-based solutions.
