SeismoTsunami-CNT: An Ultralight Carbon-Nanotube Fiber Sensor Network for Real-Time Detection of Megathrust Earthquakes and Tsunami Genesis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Rapid detection of subduction-zone ruptures and the earliest phases of tsunami formation remains one of the grand challenges in global disaster mitigation. We propose SeismoTsunami-CNT—a distributed, kilometer-scale sensing web woven from aligned carbon-nanotube (CNT) fibers that achieves nano-strain and sub-millipascal hydrodynamic pressure resolution while operating at < 50 mW km⁻¹. Unlike fiber-optic DAS or sparse DART buoys, the CNT web directly measures both quasi-static seafloor deformation and dynamic pressure transients associated with tsunami generation, providing 2-3 minutes of additional warning for near-field coastal communities.
