Liberty, Equality and Fraternity: A Literary Exploration of Revolutionary Ideals in Selected Texts

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This research paper explores the interrelated ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity as represented in literary texts across diverse historical and cultural contexts. Originating as core principles of the French Revolution, these concepts have transcended political discourse to become foundational values in the humanities, especially in literature. The study examines how authors engage with these ideals to critique social hierarchies, resist oppression and advocate for collective well-being. Through close textual analysis of selected literary works—spanning genres, regions and time periods—the paper investigates the nuanced portrayal of individual freedom, social justice and human solidarity. The analysis highlights how literature not only reflects socio-political realities but also functions as a transformative space that imagines more equitable and inclusive societies. Grounded in political philosophy and literary theory, the paper adopts a comparative and thematic approach to reveal how the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity are both celebrated and contested in literary narratives. By situating literary representations within their historical and ideological frameworks, the study underscores the enduring relevance of these values in the pursuit of justice and human dignity. Ultimately, the paper contributes to a deeper understanding the capacity of literature to engage with universal ideals and influence socio-political consciousness.
