Raw DNA sequences and genus-level dietary and vegetation matrices of sympatric herbivores along a grazing gradient

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Data Overview: This dataset supports the study "How much is too much? Grazing intensity governs wildlife–livestock interactions in alpine meadows." It contains raw environmental DNA (eDNA) sequencing data and processed genus-level abundance matrices used for dietary and niche overlap analyses.1. Raw Sequencing Data (FASTQ)Description: Raw sequencing reads obtained from animal fecal samples targeting the chloroplast rbcL gene to identify dietary components.File Format: Compressed FASTQ (.fq.gz).Naming Convention: File names follow the format A_B_C.fq, where:A: Denotes the herbivore species (yak or pika).B: Denotes the Site ID (1–24), corresponding to the pasture numbering in Table S1 and S2 of the manuscript.C: Indicates the sequencing read direction (R1 for forward reads, R2 for reverse reads).2. Processed Genus-level Matrices (CSV) These files contain the processed taxonomic data used in the R code to generate Figure 4 and Figure 5.diet_pika_genus.csv & diet_yak_genus.csv:Content: These files represent the dietary composition of pikas and yaks at the genus level.Structure: Rows represent the Pasture ID (1–24), and columns represent Plant Genera.Values: Cell values represent the relative abundance (%) of sequences assigned to each plant genus within the fecal sample.plant_genus_matrix_100percent.csv:Content: This file represents the plant community composition recorded during field vegetation surveys.Structure: Rows represent the Pasture ID (1–24), and columns represent Plant Genera.Values: Cell values represent the relative Importance Value (IV) of each genus in the field, normalized to sum to 100% per site.
