Supporting documentation for Intervention approaches to address allostatic load-associated health disparities across high income and low/middle- income countries: A Scoping Review
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Description: Scoping Review of Allostatic Load Intervention StrategiesThis entry provides a summary of a scoping review examining the translation of Allostatic Load (AL) theory into formal health interventions. While AL theory effectively explains the link between chronic stress and physiological wear-and-tear, its application in structured clinical and public health interventions—specifically across varying economic settings—has historically been under-researched.Methodological ApproachThe review employed a quaternary methodology to map the existing literature:Primary & Secondary Analysis: Concept mapping to standardize key terminology within the AL framework.Tertiary Analysis: An in-depth examination of publications from three foundational subject-matter experts.Quaternary Analysis: A synthesis of findings to categorize intervention profiles across the published literature.Key FindingsScope: 18 articles were identified, spanning diverse study designs and settings.Intervention Categories: Strategies included mental and physical health support, pharmaceutical interventions, and both individual and community-based management. The Disparity Gap: Although health disparities were frequently mentioned as a backdrop, the review found a significant lack of interventions explicitly designed with defined disparity reduction as a primary goal.Global Inequity: There is a notable absence of equitable, "upstream" intervention approaches that address the root causes of chronic stress in both High-Income Countries (HIC) and Low/Middle-Income Countries (LMIC).Future DirectionsThe findings suggest a critical need for modern research methodologies, specifically the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to develop scalable strategies that mitigate the global burden of disease and mortality associated with chronic stress. Keywords: Allostatic load; stress burden; HIC; LMIC; intervention; health disparities; artificial intelligence.
