Fundus Images for Diabetic Retinopathy
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: 228 fundus images from type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Fundus images of single-field fundus photographs with a 45-degree field of view were captured using a Zeiss Visucam 500 with a resolution of 2100 x 2100 pixels in JPG format. The data included patients aged 18 and over, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The ethnicity distribution of the cohort was predominantly Malay 168 (73.7%), followed by Malaysian Chinese 32 (14.0%) and Malaysian Indian 28 (12.3%). Patients who had received treatments for diabetic retinopathy (DR), such as intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, pan-retinal photocoagulation, or vitrectomy, were excluded. Two experienced ophthalmologists independently reviewed the fundus images, evaluating the presence or absence of DR, the stage of retinopathy, and the presence or absence of maculopathy. These fundus images achieved complete agreement among the ophthalmologists on the presence of DR, stages of DR, and maculopathy. The International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy (ICDR) and Diabetic Macular Edema Disease Severity Scales were used to define and stage DR. Diabetic maculopathy was defined by the presence of exudate in the fovea within one disc diameter, a group of exudates in the macula, or microaneurysms/hemorrhages within one disc diameter of the macula. In this dataset, 53.5% had DR 22 (10%) mild NPDR24 (11%) moderate NPDR28 (12%) severe NPDR32 (13%) PDR16 (7%) ADED80 (35.1%) images with evidence of maculopathy.
