The understanding of technology in Jacques Ellul’s theology: eschatology and ecology

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The article is devoted to the eschatological understanding of the phenomenon oftechnique in the theology of J. Ellul. The study establishes the relationship between two areas of scientific interests of the French philosopher - sociology and theology. Eschatological motives in the description of the existing technical order in modern society are found in the earliest works of J. Ellul, dating back to the personalist period of his work. In the 1930s. J. Ellul formulated the most important theses that will bring him fame in the philosophical community 20 years later: the role of means of information influence in the formation of society, the widespreadtechnization of life, the identity of political ideologies in the very foundations of their way of thinking, the powerlessness of politics against technology. Much attention is paid to the polemics between J. Ellul and E. Mounier regarding the neutral nature of technique and the interpretation of biblical texts in connection with the transformative destiny of man. At the same time, the characteristic features of J. Ellul’s theology are indicated in connection with the question of technique and the possibilities that his analysis of Christian eschatological thinking opens up for building a new ecological behavior.
