Review of Technologies for Kerosene Fuel Production Without Using Antiwear Additives

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article reviews the main technologies of jet fuel production in Russia. A brief characterization of each process indicating its main features, advantages and disadvantages is given.Hydrotreating is one of the most effective methods for removal of sulphur compounds from straight-run kerosene fuel, which is the most common in Russia. However, hydrotreating leads to a decrease in the content of natural surfactants in hydrotreated kerosene fuel, which requires the involvement of imported antiwear additives. Such dependence on imported supplies is a potential threat to Russia's national security. A more efficient and economical analogue of hydrotreating is hydrodemercaptanisation, aimed only at removal of corrosive-active mercaptan sulphur compounds without loss of lubricity. There is a method of oxidative demercaptanisation of kerosene fuel, in which the removal of undesirable compounds occurs due to oxidation of mercaptans by air oxygen. As a result, jet fuel is produced that complies with State Standard 10227-86 in terms of mercaptan sulphur content, and most of the natural lubricants present in untreated kerosene fuel are retained, so the lubricity of the finished product is not reduced. DemerusJet technology uses a highly efficient catalyst with a lifetime of more than 8 years, which does not require regeneration. This technology is most preferable due to the absence of toxic waste in the form of sulphur-alkali emissions and exhaust air.The article indicates the feasibility of using each of the technologies to produce jet fuel.
