Type: dissertation
Abstract: Education is an important aspect of everyone’s life and directly correlates to an individual’s health outcomes and quality of life. Unfortunately, many children throughout the United States experience a variety of barriers giving rise to educational disparities. In Granville and Vance Counties (GVC), North Carolina historical inequities have only exacerbated these gaps. For the youth (aged 0-18), these barriers exist at an intersection with priorities detailed in the Granville-Vance 2021 Community Health Assessment (CHA). Through a contextual analysis and review of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) related to education in GVC, recommendations for action have been identified as a set of actional strategies focused on datasharing, mental health support, and community partnerships. This approach offers a multifaceted plan that can build more resilient communities for GVC.
