Drawing People In Journalism's Role in the Relationship Between Art and Community
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis explores the role journalism plays in the relationship between art and community. This is done through a literature review followed by interviews with five journalists, seven artists, and eight community organizers — some of whom are also artists. Each transcript was processed through thematic analysis to identify the key concerns and ideas shared. The top subjects explored included the importance of and need to increase community engagement with art and artists, the value news exposure can have to widen artists’ audience, the efforts that alternative news sources like independent newspapers have made to consistently and robustly cover the arts, and the expectations of journalists and newsrooms to dig deeper into their arts coverage beyond surface-level profile stories. The codes and themes discovered in the thematic analysis were used to create three long-form feature articles discussing the dynamic between journalism, art, and community, with a focus on each perspective of the dynamic.
