The Illusion of Heroism in Global Systems

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper investigates the global phenomenon of performative heroism—where leaders are elevated through symbolic gestures yet fail to achieve substantive national transformation. It critiques outdated paradigms of international relations (G0–G2+) for enabling such theatrics, where spectacle substitutes for structural progress. Through case studies including Ukraine, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Brexit, and Italy, the paper reveals how these orchestrated performances often lead to war, sanctions, economic hardship, and national fragmentation— costs borne entirely by the public. In contrast, it highlights authentic models of nation- building found in Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, where leadership is evaluated not by rhetorical defiance but by institutional strength, social investment, and developmental outcomes
