Abstract: Audio recording and transcript of Stephen Krall's 1979 interview with Bernard McNicholl for the Coal Tyee History Project. Krall shares memories of coal mining on Vancouver Island, where he, his father, and his brother worked in the industry. Krall talks about how his family moved to Vancouver Island, living first in Bevan and then Nanaimo. He recalls his school days and his first job at the coal mine. He gives details about various mining jobs, methods, and equipment, and reflects on several of his own "narrow escapes."
