Creating conditions for accountability: Environmental impacts and challenges to the humanitarian response to the Rohingya Refugee Crisis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: For her capstone paper, Anjali Katta researched and analyzed the role the natural environment plays within the Rohingya refugee population in Bangladesh, more specifically how the Rohingya presence impacts the environment as well as the ways in which refugees and local communities are vulnerable to environmental catastrophes. Katta notes that to house and support such a large group, the Bangladeshi government and United Nations, along with other aid organizations, constructed camp infrastructure and mechanisms to provide continued energy, food, and resources to the Rohingya people. Thus, this paper sheds light on the environmental degradation of land and resources as well as the long-term effects that can worsen the effects of cyclones, floods, and reduce the sustainability of the ecosystem. Lastly, this paper will also highlight how environmental degradation intersects with the lives of refugees, particularly women, and can potentially increase protection concerns surrounding gender based violence, mobility, and security.
