Two Chrysobulls That Demetrios Chrysoloras Wrote
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Demetrios Chrysoloras (b. XIV cen. med.; d. after 1416) was a rhetor, a statesman and an anti-Latin theologian. A close friend of Manuel II Palaiologos, he served as mesazon of John VII Palaiologos in Thessaloniki (1403-1408). While holding the office, he composed two chrysobulls that the despot issued, in 1405 and 1407 respectively. These texts are here identified as Chrysoloras' works; the article also discusses their textual models (esp. Philo) and compares them with other works from the same author.
