Type: article
Abstract: Mullerian anomalies of the female genital tract have a prevelance between 4-7% in the general population. They are defined as deviations from normal anatomy and are the result of embryological maldevelopment of the paramesonephric ducts. Teenage girls and women experience a variety of symptoms due to these anomalies ranging from chronic pelvic pain to endometriosis and infertility. Surgery for correcting these anomalies is mainly indicated to resolve fertility problems specifically recurrent ones.In cases of severe abdominal pain too removal of the non functional organ is recommended. The classic surgical approach for Mullerian anomalies is: 1) hysteroscopic metroplasty, 2) abdominal metroplasty, 3) hemi hysterectomy and 4) vaginoplasty. The results of surgery are: 1) for septate uterus good fertility outcome as compared with poor outcome in the uncorrected septum, 2) for bicornuate, didelhpys and arcuate uterus there is increased fertility and pregnancy outcome after surgery and 3) if vaginal septum is present is best to remove it, but leave the cervical septum if any.
