Sanctuaries 360 and the future of ocean tourism: exploring National Marine Sanctuaries through virtual reality
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: America’s national marine sanctuaries are among the world’s most treasured ocean spaces, offering unparalleled opportunities for sustainable and regenerative recreation. These protected areas, spanning from coral reefs and kelp forests to deepsea canyons, serve as vital habitats for marine life while also supporting ecotourism and conservation focused experiences. Yet, for many people, the opportunity to explore these underwater wonders firsthand remains out of reach. The National Marine Sanctuary System’s innovative Sanctuaries 360: Explore the Blue series is bridging this gap, bringing the ocean’s hidden beauty to anyone with an internet connection.
