Hybrid Energy Storage Systems Design Tool

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This work presents the development of a simulation tool for sizing hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), with a specific focus on electrochemical batteries, while considering energy management algorithms. The tool is designed to optimize the technical, energy, and economic parameters of HESS, with the aim of promoting their implementation and commercialization, particularly in the context of active management for efficient and smart grids. The developed tool simulates the performance of the hybrid systems, considering the final application and the specific requirements of the user (client). In addition, it facilitates the implementation of real-time application algorithms to ensure optimized hybrid operation and the achievement of the desired goals. The tool also includes the option to incorporate a solar photovoltaic (PV) generation profile. The sizing and control tool offers an approach to energy management system (EMS) value-stacking objectives defined by the user. Users can obtain optimal solutions tailored to their application by considering factors such as their typical consumption profile, available space (e.g., volume constraints - area and height) or specific technical limitations of existing installations or local characteristics. The latest version of the tool addresses various functional and compatibility issues, including interface, data input and output handling, and testing using different machine configurations and different individuals.
