Rites De Passage In An Emigrant Community.

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Migration, as a transformative life experience, plays a pivotal role in shaping the social and cultural fabric of emigrant communities. During my doctoral fieldwork on an emigrant community in Northern Punjab, Pakistan, the significance of lifecycle rituals especially death and marriage appeared pivotal in determining the dynamics of social interaction. This study explores the rites de passage within the emigrant community of Kallar Syedan, emphasizing how migration intersects with key life events—birth, marriage, and death—to form a distinct sociocultural lifecycle. Drawing on ethnographic observations and narratives, the research highlights how migration transforms traditional rites, fostering hybrid rituals and expectations. Birth rituals, shaped by the dual influences of local traditions and the aspirations of neo-citizenship, exhibit varying degrees of celebration based on gender and socio-economic status. Marriage, a cornerstone of cultural identity and familial stability, is revealed as a tool for upward mobility and maintaining connections with ancestral traditions. Death, the ultimate rite, underscores the community's collective mourning practices, where the socio-political dynamics of transposing bodies back to native soil become a symbol of cultural allegiance.
