Applications of the Iron-Carbon Equilibrium Diagram in Engineering and Material Science
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Understanding the characteristics, stages, and changes of steel and cast iron—two essential materials in engineering and industry—requires an understanding of the Iron-Carbon (Fe-C) equilibrium diagram. This research paper investigates the practical applications of the Fe-C equilibrium diagram in material science and engineering. By elucidating the phases of iron-carbon alloys, such as ferrite, austenite, cementite, and pearlite, the paper highlights their impact on mechanical properties, such as hardness, ductility, and tensile strength, which dictate suitability for various applications. Furthermore, this study explores phase transformation principles used in heat treatment processes, welding, casting, and alloying, demonstrating how controlled carbon levels and heat treatments refine mechanical properties tailored to industry-specific needs, from automotive to construction sectors. The findings also illustrate how advancements in computational modeling enable precise predictions of phase behaviors, optimizing material design and performance. Thus, the Fe-C equilibrium diagram remains an indispensable tool in engineering, guiding innovations in material selection, processing, and performance enhancement across diverse applications.
