Rise and fall of Acetanilide usage and essentiality of Paracetamol drug
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: *Acetanilide's Dark Past and Paracetamol's Rise* Acetanilide was once widely used for pain relief and fever reduction, but its use was halted due to carcinogenic effects, including methemoglobinemia and increased cancer risk. This led to the development and popularity of safer alternatives like paracetamol (acetaminophen). *Paracetamol's Story* Paracetamol's history dates back to the 1950s when researchers sought alternatives to aspirin. Clinical trials confirmed its efficacy and safety as a pain reliever and fever reducer. Today, paracetamol is a top-selling medication globally, with over 30 billion doses sold annually. *Medical Anthropology Insights* Medical anthropology explores how cultural perceptions of pain and fever influence medication development and use. It also examines globalization's impact on access to medications like paracetamol and how traditional medicine informs pharmaceutical development. *From Toxic to Therapeutic* Interestingly, while acetanilide itself is carcinogenic, derivatives have shown promise in inhibiting Hepatitis C Virus replication, highlighting the potential for re-purposing existing compounds. *Key Takeaways* - Acetanilide's carcinogenic effects led to its discontinuation - Paracetamol is a widely used, effective, and relatively safe alternative - Medical anthropology provides valuable insights into medication development, use, and regulation
