Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Micronutrient deficiencies are a significant public health concern, particularly among mothers of reproductive age and infants in developing regions. This study assesses the prevalence and impact of micronutrient deficiencies in Kismayo, Somalia, focusing on the nutritional status of mothers and infants at Kismayo General Hospital. The research identifies key micronutrient deficiencies, their causes, and the associated health risks. Using a cross-sectional study design, data was collected through surveys, interviews, and laboratory tests conducted on mothers and infants. The findings indicate a high prevalence of deficiencies in iron, vitamin A, iodine, and folic acid, which contribute to anemia, poor immune function, and developmental delays. The study highlights critical factors such as inadequate dietary intake, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare services as primary causes of micronutrient deficiencies. The research underscores the need for comprehensive nutrition intervention programs, including micronutrient supplementation, public health awareness campaigns, and improved healthcare services. Recommendations include enhancing community-based nutrition education, integrating fortified foods into diets, and strengthening maternal and child health policies. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and organizations working to combat micronutrient deficiencies in Somalia.
