Science Explorer (SciX): A Valuable New Information Service for Earth Science Literature, Data, and Software Discovery
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The Science Explorer (SciX) represents a groundbreaking tool for literature, data, and software discovery, now available to the Earth Science community. Built upon the robust foundation of the Astrophysics Data System (ADS), which has powered search and discovery within the Astrophysics community for over two decades, SciX extends these capabilities to all domains under NASA's Science Mission Directorate. SciX leverages the power and open-access ethos of ADS, providing Earth scientists with unparalleled access to a comprehensive repository of scientific literature, datasets, and software tools. By integrating these resources, SciX supports interdisciplinary research and fosters a collaborative environment where scientific knowledge is democratized, and scientific discovery is accelerated. Advanced bibliometric data visualizations within SciX aid researchers in uncovering new interdisciplinary research connections, further enhancing the platform's utility. This poster introduces SciX's process for the rapid ingestion of new Earth science content, making it a comprehensive resource for Earth science literature, data, and software, rivaling other digital library platforms. Innovations underway to tailor the platform to the specific needs of the global Earth science community are highlighted, demonstrating NASA SciX's commitment to providing a user-centric service. Furthermore, the poster illustrates how researchers can incorporate and manage their own resources within SciX, empowering them with the knowledge and tools needed to represent their own publications and products. By providing a trusted platform for information discovery and research, SciX directly contributes to NASA's Earth Science to Action priorities, enabling the delivery of reliable information for resilience activities and promoting a holistic understanding of the Earth system.
