Psycological Aspects of Perception of Authentic Content in Language Learning
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the psychological dimensions of perceiving authentic content in language learning, focusing on its impact on 9th-grade students' motivation, anxiety, and cognitive engagement. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study involves two groups: an Experimental Group that engages with authentic materials such as news articles, TED Talks, and social media posts, and a Control Group using traditional textbook-based resources. Through pre- and post-intervention surveys, classroom observations, and qualitative feedback, the research highlights significant findings: the Experimental Group exhibited increased motivation (85% reporting greater engagement), reduced anxiety (70% of lower-proficiency learners showed improvement), and enhanced cognitive skills, demonstrating higher-order thinking and critical engagement with the materials. Furthermore, the sense of social belonging among students was notably improved through collaborative discussions prompted by authentic content. The study concludes that integrating authentic materials not only bolsters linguistic skills but also fosters students' psychological growth, positioning them as active participants in a global language community. Overall, the findings underscore the transformative role of authentic content in language education, advocating for its thoughtful incorporation to optimize learner engagement and success.
