Further findings on the intergenerational transmission of alcohol consumption

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The work constructs a unique, data-rich dataset with 40,516 parent-child pairs, offering unprecedented insight into the mechanisms of intergenerational alcohol consumption transmission. Key findings include: Transmission persists lifelong, peaking in middle adolescence. Same-sex parental influence dominates, with a rare cross-gender asymmetry: sons adopt maternal traits during middle adolescence and early adulthood, while daughters never acquire paternal patterns. Mother-to-daughter transmission elasticity (0.1) slightly exceeds father-to-son’s (0.09), possibly due to additional gender norm effects on childless young adult daughters. While correlational, findings appear robust to endogeneity concerns.
