Abstract: Challenges of Migration and Integration. Has Europe failed to integrate Muslims? Dr. Hassan Al-AssiAcademic and Researcher in Anthropology As globalization continues to gain momentum, more and more people are leaving their homes in pursuit of their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families. Muslim migrants who are flocking to Europe from widely diverse communities spread across North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia represent a wide variety of local cultures and traditions. Networks across the Mediterranean form the basis of migration routes and are key factors in the destinations of these migrants and in the overall migration process, whether towards Europe or Other Islamic countries. South-north flows are intertwined with south-south flows, among which the Gulf Arab states stand out as a major destination, not just for low-skilled labor. Different attitudes arise within a diverse discourse on coexistence, integration, assimilation, and the preservation of identity. Embracing this transnational dimension of both destination and point of origin enables the investigation of migration beyond a purely Eurocentric approach. Thus, different national patterns are analysed with a focus on a number of important case studies. By discussing policies and cultural approaches, the aim is to add innovative studies to the challenge of integration. Multiculturalism on the part of the nation-states that make up the European Union is one way to move the dialogue between different cultural frameworks towards a more harmonious form.
