Digging Up Delicacies of the Past. Indexing Historical Menues with Volunteers and Citizen Scientists
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Historical menus contain a wealth of information about past culinary events. They become even more valuable as a source when they are thoroughly analysed and indexed. The German Culinary Archive at the SLUB holds a treasure of 45,000 such menu and dining cards. They are currently being catalogued as part of a citizen science project. In the future, the use of digital tools, combined with AI and human intelligence, will make it possible to index these menus down to the level of individual dishes, ingredients, locations, people, events, and more.
