Forking Paths: A Historical and Comparative Analysis of Discrete and Harmonic Computing

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The history of computation is often presented as a linear progression, a steady march toward the binary, digital world we inhabit today. This narrative, while convenient, obscures a more complex and contested history. The dominant paradigm of discrete, symbolic computation was not a foregone conclusion; it was one of two major paths that emerged in the mid-20th century. Its victory was the result of specific theoretical breakthroughs, powerful engineering solutions, and a self-reinforcing economic cycle. To understand the alternative, one must first deeply understand the path that was taken—the path that led from the continuous world of the analog signal to the abstracted, error-corrected certainty of the digital bit. This journey begins with the very nature of analog computation itself.
